Central Haj committee to be constituted soon

Tuesday April 02, 2013 07:48:27 PM, IANS

New Delhi: A new Haj Committee will be constituted soon, External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid said Tuesday.

The government is in the process of issuing a notification in this regard, the minister told the media.

The government has received nominations from the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha secretariat.

The State Haj committees have also submitted names of nominees for the Central Haj Committee, which has been headless for some months.

Former minister Mohsina Kidwai completed her term as chairman of the Haj Committee a few months ago.

The minister said that more than three lakh applications had been received by the Haj Committee of India from Haj pilgrimage.

The Indian quota is 170,000. While 125,000 will go through HCI, the others will perform the Haj through tour operators.
