Mumbai: The Maharashtra State Election Commission has made all the necessary arrangements in Latur, Parbhani and Chandrapur where polling to elect the new civic bodies will be held on Wednesday April 19, 2017.
In view of intense heat the State Election Commission had earlier extended the polling time by 01 hour. Accordingly registered voters in the three cities can exercise their democratic rights from morning 07:30 to evening 06:30.
The extension of poll timing will be also applicable for by-elections to be held tomorrow for one seat each in Akola Zilla Parishad and Akot Panchayat Samiti in Akola district in east Maharashtra. The bypolls were necessitated as these seats have been lying vacant.
Decision to extend the poll timing was taken in the view of severe heat conditions prevailing in Vidarbha and Marathawada regions of the state. While Chandrapur falls under Vidarbha region, Latur and Parbhani fall under Marathwada, State Election Commissioner J S Saharia said.
Saharia also said that adequate arrangements will be made for providing shelter from heat at all polling stations, besides facilities for drinking water, according to PTI.
Congress, the ruling party in Latur Municipal Corporation, has 49 members in a house of 70. The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) has a total of 13 members whereas the Shiv Sena and Republican Party of India (RPI) respectively have 06 and 02 members.
In Parbhani the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) has its Mayor with 30 members in a house of 65. Congress has a total of 23 members, Shiv Sena 08, Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) 02 and Independents 02.
In Chandrapur Municipal Corporation which has a total 66 seats, Congress has 26, BJP 18, Shiv Sena 05, NCP 04, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) 01, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) 01, Bhartiya Bahujan Singh 01 and 10 Independents.
A total of 1,284 candidates are in the fray for 201 seats in the three civic bodies. While 460 candidates are contesting in Chandrapur, 406 candidates are in the fray in Latur and 418 in Parbhani.
Besides the parties which have their members in the three Municipal Corporation, Asaduddin Owaisi led All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) has also fielded its candidates in the elections.
The AIMIM is contesting the Latur Municipal Corporation elections in alliance with Maharashtra Vikas Aghadi and Shetkari Sangathna. The alliance has fielded a total of 37 candidates, of them 22 are from the AIMIM.
In Chandrapur, Shiv Sena has fielded 61 candidates, of them 03 are Muslims. They are Irfan Ahmed Shaikh (Ward No 10), Basheer Khan (Ward No 12) and Sultan Ahmed Shaikh (Ward No 06).
A total of 7,93,621 voters are eligible to cast their votes in the three corporations.
The results of elections, including of the bypolls, will be declared on April 21.
