AIMIM routed in Latur, Prabhani civic elections; Setback to Owaisi's expansion plans

The All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) led by Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi, which had impressed by resounding victories in recently held Maharashtra civic elections in Mumbai, Marathwada and Vidarbha regions, could not win a single seat in Latur and Parbhani results of which were announced today.

The AIMIM had contested the Latur Municipal Corporation elections in alliance with Maharashtra Vikas Aghadi and Shetkari Sangathna. The alliance had fielded a total of 37 candidates, of them 22 are from the AIMIM.

The alliance was a good move by Owaisi showing to rivals the party's acceptance to local groups. But, despite this the AIMIM could not win a single seat in Latur.

The Bahrtiya Janata Party (BJP) won 38 seats whereas the ruling Congress and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) respectively won 31 and 01 seat each in Latur Municipal Corporation (LMC) elections counting of votes where ended today afternoon.

Latur Municipal Corporation has a total of 70 seats of 18 wards.

Besides to Congress, the Latur election is a setback for NCP. It had 13 members in the last body but has now ended with just 01.

The Shiv Sena which had 06 members in the last body could not win a single seat.

As per 2012 election result, Congress, the ruling party in Latur Municipal Corporation, has 49 members in a house of 70. The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) has a total of 13 members whereas the Shiv Sena and Republican Party of India (RPI) respectively have 06 and 02 members.

In Parbhani, according to trends available at 03:00 pm, the Congress is ahead in 31 of the total 65 wards whereas the BJP is leading in just 07 wards. The NCP and Shiv Sena are ahead in 07 wards each.

Stakes were high for the AIMIM in Parbhani as being close to Nanded, where the party had won the civic election first time in Maharashtra, Owaisi brothers were regulay vistor to the town. The party also has a good presence in Parbhani.

The AIMIM had fielded a dozen of candidates in Parbhani, none could win the elections.

Maintaining its lead in Congress bastion, the BJP is ahead on 35 seats whereas the ruling Congress is ahead on 25 seats in Latur where counting of votes to elect new body of Latur Municipal Corporation is still underway.

Trends at 12:00 pm also showed that Congress candidate Asgar Patel is trailing behind BJP’s Ajit Patil.

The ruling Congress is struggling in Latur - the bastion of former Maharashtra CM Ashok Chavan, where counting of votes is underway.

According to the latest trends, the BJP is leading in 31 wards whereas the Congress which is ruling the city since over a decade is ahead in 22 wards.

Counting of votes to decide the fate of 460 candidates is done on 36 tables.

Counting of votes to elect the new body of 70-member Latur Municipal Corporation (LMC), also called as Latur Mahanagar Plaika, has begun amid tight security.

The process in Latur began with counting of postal votes. After counting of postal votes are over, the Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) will start releasing the election results.

The Latur Municipal Corporation officials have also made arrangement at the civic body to show live results to the media persons.

08: 50 am Counting of votes to elect the new body of 70-member Latur Municipal Corporation (LMC), also called as Latur Mahanagar Plaika, is scheduled to begin today i.e. Friday April 21, 2017 at 10:00 am, an election officer said. Latur went to polls on Wednesday, recording 60 per cent voter turnout in the election held under intense heat.

Along with Latur, Parbhani and Chandrapur Municipal Corporations also went to the poll on Wednesday. Counting of votes in all these civic bodies will start at 10:00 am today, the election officer added.

In Latur, the main parties in the fray are the ruling Congress, Shiv Sena, Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP), Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and Asaduddin Owaisi led All India Majlise Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) which is contesting the Latur local elections for the first time.

Around 62 per cent turnout was registered in the polling held today for the Chandrapur, Parbhani and Latur municipal corporations in Maharashtra, State Election Commissioner J S Saharia said.

Due to extreme heat conditions prevalent in several parts of the state, the voting timing was extended by one hour to 6.30pm by the state Election Commission.

“Chandrapur, Parbhani and Latur recorded 57 per cent, 70 per cent and 60 per cent voting, respectively. Around 62 per cent people exercised their franchise in the polls today,” Saharia said.

The elections to three municipal corporations are considered as an acid test for the ruling BJP and the Opposition Congress and the NCP.

A total of 1,285 candidates are in the fray for the 201 seats in the three municipal corporations, whose fate will be decided by 7.93 lakh voters across 1,038 polling stations.

The stakes are high especially for the BJP as it is not in power in these three municipal corporations.

Chandrapur is the home turf of senior BJP leader and Finance Minister Sudhir Mungantiwar. At present Congress is in power in this 66-member civic body.

As many as 460 candidates are in the fray whose fate will be decided by 3.02 lakh voters. In the 70-member Latur corporation, it will a test of political clout for BJP leader and state minister Sambhajirao

Nilangekar and the local Congress MLA Amit Deshmukh.

Congress, which controls the corporation, had got a drubbing in the recent local body polls in Latur district.

The city had faced acute water crisis last year and government had to transport water by railway waggons at the peak of summer.

Here 407 candidates are in the fray whose fate will be decided by 2.78 lakh voters.

In the 65-member Parbhani municipal corporation, the battle is mainly between the incumbent NCP and Shiv Sena.

It will be a test for district guardian minister and senior Sena leader Diwakar Raote. There are 418 candidates in the fray; number of voters is 2.12 lakh.
