Lucknow: In a unique way to protest and express anger against the BJP led government over the rising tomato prices in the country, the Congress party on Wednesday opened "tomato bank" in Uttar Pradesh capital Lucknow.
The bank is named as "State Bank of Tomato" and the local Congress party workers said it will operate from morning 10 am to 05 pm and promises a variety of "attractive offers" including a 5x return on the tomatoes deposited for a period of six months, a locker for tomatoes, 80 percent loans on tomatoes and attractive interest rates for depositing tomatoes, especially for the poor.
The "State Bank of Tomato" by the Congress cropped up in Lukcnow at a time when the opposition is continuously attacking the uniond government over the agrarian crisis. The condition is so bad that prices of tomato have reached up to Rs 100 per kilogram in recent weeks in many parts of the country.
Data released by Consumer Affairs Ministry had earlier said that tomato prices in metros were ruling at Rs.95 per kg in Kolkata, Rs.92 per kg in Delhi, Rs.80 per kg in Mumbai and Rs.55 per kg in Chennai on July 29.
Social media is also flooded with messages expressing anger over the rising prices of tomatoes and the mute response of the government to tackle the situation.
Meanwhile, reports coming from some areas said onion prices too have shot up.
Alarmed by the rising prices, the AAP government in Delhi has constituted various teams of officers of food and civil supplies department and directed them to submit a daily report on prices of tomatoes and onions in wholesale markets.
