
Mumbai: In yet another attempt to clear the myth that the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) represenst Muslims alone, the party has included two non-Muslims in the first list of candidates for the Mumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) election.
The AIMIM which will be contesting the all powerful Mumbai civic elections for the first time has released the names of 18 candidates in the first list released Monday.
The two non-Muslim candidates who will contest the BMC election to be held on February 21 are Sujata Ramesh Bhale and Pushpa Balraj.
While Sujata has been fielded from Ward No 189, Pushpa Balraj will contest the ensuing election from Ward No 188, Dharavi.
Others whose names have been declared as the AIMIM candidates for the Mumbai civic polls are: Shamim Azmi (Ward No 20 Charkope), Shakir Naseeruddin Shaikh (Ward No 43 Dindoshi), Nasreen Faheem Khan (Ward No 44 Dindoshi), Shaikh Firdaus Arif (Ward No 66 Andheri), Shagufta Hussain Choudhary (Ward No 87 Bandra), Advocate Aadil Khatri (Ward No 96 Bandra), Gulnaaz Qureshi (Ward No 92 Bandra), Sharif Ibrahim (Ward No 139 Govandi), Mohd Imran Akram Qureshi (Ward No 162 Chandivali), Omar Saad (Ward No 208 Byculla), Mohd Aadil Qureshi (Ward No 211 Byculla), Haji Nisar Ah Chaand Shaikh (Ward No 221 Mumbadevi), Jamal Khan (Ward No 164 Chandivali), Nazmeen Sikandar Khan (Ward No 49 Malad Maloni), Gul Meenaz Begum (Ward No 187 Dharavi SIon) and Mateen Beg (Ward No 209 Byculla).
Most of the wards where the AIMIM has fielded the party candidates are dominated Muslims.
Party MLA Waris Pathan and AIMIM Mumbai unit Chief Shakir Patni while releasing the party's first list said the AIMIM will contest the BMC elections in 50 wards.
Pathan also said that the party will release the second list of party candidayes very soon.
He also said that some sitting corporators and leaders from other parties are in touch with the AIMIM leadership.
"It will be announced later if they are joining the AIMIM", Pathan said.
Senior Congress leader and Chairman of Mumbai Congress Minority Cell Nizamuddin Rayeen resigned from the party on Saturday. Speculations are rife in the local political circles that he will be joining the AIMIM very soon.
Rumours are also abuzz that senior Congress Corporator Waqarunnisa has joined AIMIM. Pathan however denied all these reports.
