Shimla: Prem Kumar Dhumal, who has been nominated as chief minister if the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) wins in Himachal Pradesh, came out with a surprising claim.
Reasoning with the electorates why they should vote for the BJP, Dhumal said because the party is led by such a charismatic leader who ensured victory of Donald Trump even though he was struggling in the US elections.
Trump was on the winning track as soon as he invoked Prime Minister Modi's name in his campaign, Dhumal said.
“Now, I will talk about the most powerful nation in the world, the US, and its President Trump. Everyone thought Hillary Clinton would win, but Trump won in the elections. Who knew about him?
"No one thought he would win, but during the last days of his campaign, he said he would work like India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He said that like Modi is working to take India forward, he would work for the US. And he won", Dhumal, who was campaigning for MLA Hans Raj in Chamba’s Churah Constituency, said on Friday.
“If this is the impact of Modi in the US, then in Himachal we are already No.1,” Dhumal further said.
Reacting to the Dhumal's speech, an analyst said, “BJP in general and Dhumal in particular is reducing electioneering to a farce. Voters are being taken for a ride as canvassing for support increasingly resembles a circus”.
The 68-member Himachal Pradesh Assembly elections will be held on November 9 and the result will be declared on December 18.
The ruling Congress and BJP are in fierce battle to win the polls in the Hill state.
