Mumbai: President of All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) Maharashtra Syed Moin has been arrested by the Nanded Police on Monday after a brawl with a Congress candidate ahead of the Municipal Corporation election in the city scheduled to be held on October 11, 2017.
Along with AIMIM Maharashra President Syed Moin, the Nanded Police has also arrested one AIMIM candidate and eleven party workers in the case. All the accused in the case have been sent to two day police custody.
According to the party sources, tension between the two parties contesting the ensuing Nanded Maha Nagar Palika elections took a violent turn on Sunday when an AIMIM rally was passing through the area from where the wife of Congress party worker Mohammad Nasir is also a candidate.
"The AIMIM rally on Sunday afternoon was a warm up for the party's public meeting scheduled for the evening. Clashes between the workers of the two parties erupted after Congress workers led by Mohammad Nasir stopped the AIMIM rally", a party source said.
Syed Moin reached the spot with other AIMIM workers following which the clashes turned uglier. AIMIM candidate Mohammad Irfan alias Shera and Mohammad Nasir of Congress have sustained injuries.
The arrest of AIMIM Maharashtra President Syed Moin and other party workers just a week before the polling day is being seen as a big blow to the Hyderabad based party.
