New Delhi: Thousands of Muslim women on Wednesday gathered at Ramlila Maidan in New Delhi and renewed their demand to roll back the Muslim Women Protection of Rights on Marriage Bill – popularly known as Triple Talaq Bill. At the same time, they brought to the notice of the “well-wishers” of the Muslim women the other issues which according to them needed the government’s urgent attention.
“Triple Talaq Bill is in no way helpful to the Muslim women victims of instant talaq. A simple formula to eliminate and finish instant talaq is to send the Muslim men, who do not provide education to their daughters, for 03 years in jail. Do this and you will see triple talaq is gone”, a woman protester said while talking to BBC Live from Ramlila Maidan on Wednesday.
The woman protester was referring to the Muslim Women Protection of Rights on Marriage Bill – popularly known as Triple Talaq Bill which criminalizes instant talaq or triple talaq in one go with 03 years in jail.
She immediately found support from other Muslim women who had gathered at Ramlila Maidan to protest against the Triple Talaq Bill. “Yes education is important. Only by educating Muslim girls such issues can be tackled”, another protester, a graduate, said supporting the idea.
The Muslim women also demanded outright roll back of the proposed bill which has been passed by the Lok Sabha but stalled in Rajya Sabha where opposition members including some of the allies of the ruling Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) are demanding amendments.
“The proposed bill is full of flaws despite being an open interference to the Islamic Sharia. Besides being against constitution of India, anti-women and anti-children it is full of flaws. How can you criminalize an act which has already been banned by the Supreme Court of India?” they asked.
In reply to a question if the proposed bill will be acceptable to them after the needed amendments as demanded also by some women activists are made, they said a firm no.
“No, no, no”, they said in one voice. “There is no need of any law since the Supreme Court of India has already banned instant talaq”, they said adding that they wholeheartedly support the Apex Court’s order. “Instant talaq is a social issue. But, the government is treating it as a criminal act, that too when the Supreme Court has already banned it. You need education and awareness campaigns to tackle social issues”, they said.
Ramlila Maidan protest of Muslim women was called by the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB). This was the last protest rally against the proposed bill. Earlier, similar rallies were also organized in 180 cities including Mumbai, Lucknow, Hyderabad, Malegaon, Patna, Jaipur, Kolkata, Bhopal, Nagpur, Pune, Nanded, Dhule, Nashik, Prabhani, Thane, Bhiwandi, Ahmedabad and Surat. In the next phase, the Muslim panel will constitue area-wise committees of women activists and run nationwide awareness campaign.
Besides triple talaq bill, Muslim women are also upset with President Ramnath Kovind over his address to the Joint Session of the Parliament wherein he had said, “For decades, the dignity of Muslim women has remained captive to political cost-benefit. Now the Nation has an opportunity to emancipate them from this situation. My Government has tabled a Bill on Triple Talaq in Parliament.”
“I hope that the Parliament will soon pass it into a law. The law on Triple Talaq, once enacted, will also enable Muslim sisters and daughters to live a life of self-respect with courage”, Kovind had said.
Calling President Kovind’s statements misleading and untrue, Muslim women want President Kovind to take them back and demand from the government to remove them from the Parliament and Rashtrapati Bhavan records.
