Washington: US President Donald Trump on Thursday announced that he will meet North Korea’s leader Kim Jong-un on June 12 in Singapore to discuss the denuclearisation on the Korean peninsula.
“The highly anticipated meeting between Kim Jong Un and myself will take place in Singapore on June 12th. We will both try to make it a very special moment for World Peace!,” Trump tweeted.
Citing officials, US media had reported on Wednesday that the United States and North Korea have settled on Singapore as the location of the first-ever meeting between a sitting US president and a North Korean leader.
The meeting between the two world leaders will be held about a month after Kim walked into South Korea to meet his counterpart in South Korea. In a good-will gesture, Kim had only last week scrapped the 'Pyongyang Time Zone' and synched the clock by 30 minutes to match with South Korea.
The US officials, who spoke to Fox News, CNN, CBS and Reuters, indicated that the US president's aides were given the go-ahead to plan a summit in Singapore after a meeting between US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Kim in Pyongyang on Wednesday.
White House press spokesperson Sarah Huckabee Sanders said on Wednesday that the meeting had been scheduled, but did not elaborate further. Trump had earlier promised he would reveal the time and place of the meeting within three days.
Various media reports had earlier named Singapore, Mongolia and even Russia as possible locations for the meeting between the two leaders. Trump himself had fueled speculations late last month, hinting that the Peace House in Korea's Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), the venue of the recent inter-Korean summit, might be the best option. However, on Wednesday, he ruled out the DMZ as the location.
Singapore, which, according to media reports, has long made the final cut, was touted by South Korean diplomatic sources as the most likely place for the Trump Kim Summit. On Monday, South Korea's Chosun Ilbo reported that the chances of Singapore hosting the meeting had "increased greatly."
