Mumbai: All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) MLA from Mumbai's Nagpada area Waris Pathan on Wednesday expressed regret and tendered apology for praising a Hindu diety during the Ganesh festival which ended on Tuesday.
AIMIM MLA Waris Pathan apologized after a massive online and offline protest by crtitics as well as followers of the AIMIM party, especially in Hyderabad and Muslim pockets of Telangana where state electiosn are expected in next few months.
Following the anger among its cadres, AIMIM leadership also slammed Waris Pathan for what it said an "un-Islamic act".
The move followed after videos of Waris Pathan participating in puja at a Ganpati pandal in his constituency and chanting slogans in praise of Hindu diety were widely shared on different social media.
Fearing that the video might hamper its chances in the upcoming sta elections, top AIMIM leadership asked Pathan to tender apology, sources at party headquarters in Hyderabad said.
"I accept my mistake and will never repeat such things in future", Waris Pathan said in a video.
"Like other human beings, I too commit mistakes. I regret what I did. I hope Allah will forgive me and so will you all", Waris Pathan said.
Idol worship or praising idols is prohibited and considered sin in Islam.
Interestingly, Waris Pathan was recently in news for refusing to chant Vande Mataram and Bharat Mata Ki Jai. He was also suspended from the Maharashtra assembly after he created a ruckus in the house on the issue.
