New Delhi: At least 17 people have been killed, 03 of them who jumped in panic, after a massive fire broke out at Hotel Arpit Palace on Gurudwara Road in Delhi's Karol Bagh area in the wee hours of morning Tuesday. As many as 35 people have been injred in the incident.
Union Tourism Minister KJ Alphons who visited the hotel after the incidence said that all emergency exits were very narrow and were closed every night. Delhi Home Minister Satyendar Jain also said there were lapses on the part of hotel administration and suitable legal action will be taken.
Initial probe revealed a suspected short circuit could have sparked the fire, civic officials said.
There were 53 people in the 45-room budget hotel, which had a canopy on the terrace housing what appeared to be a restaurant, officials said.
The fire broke out at around 04:35 am Tuesday. Video grabs of the fire taken by an eyewitness showed flames billowing out from the terrace into the pre-dawn darkness.
Among those killed in the fire is a child. The child as well as the two people who jumped are yet to be identified. Many guests who were deep in sleep when the fire broke out are still trapped inside.
Of the 17 people who died in the incident, ten are identified -- three from Kerala, one from Gujarat, and two from Myanmar. The others, officials said, have been identified but efforts were on to ascertain where they came from.
