New Delhi: The controversial Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, 2018, popularly known as Triple Talaq bill, and Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2019 stand lapsed as the Rajya Sabha was on Wednesday adjourned sine die without taking up the two bills.

The Modi government tried its best to pass the two bills in the last parliament session of its tenure despite strong oppositionn from the Muslims and people in North East India. However, it miserably failed in garnering the needed support to pass the two bills.

The Rajya Sabha was adjourned sine die after it passed some bills including Interim Budget and Finance Bill for 2019-20 without debate. Chairman M. Venkaiah Naidu in his customary address at the close of the session rued that precious time of the House was lost in protests, stalling proceedings.

The Lok Sabha on the other hand passed the Banning of Unregulated Deposit Schemes Bill, 2018.

Today is the last session of this budget session and the last sitting of the 16th Lok Sabha.

Earlier, the CAG (Comptroller and Auditor General) report on Rafale was tabled in the Parliament. The CAG in its report said compared to the 126-aircraft deal negotiated by the Congress-led government, India managed to save 17.08 per cent money for the India Specific Enhancements in the new contract. India had wanted 13 specific changes to the Rafale jet to make it more suited to the country's defence parameters. The CAG report suggests that the cost of these upgrades is far cheaper now.

The Congress and other opposition parties have dismissed the CAG report as biased saying auditor Rajiv Mehrishi was Finance Secretary when the deal for 36 Rafale fighter jets was inked in 2016.

The Congress alleges that Mr Mehrishi was "complicit in the irregularities" in the Rafale deal and alleged that "the bungling was happening at the highest level with his direct or indirect complicity and consent".

The NDA on the other hand is upbeat and said the CAG report has exposed the lies of Congress and other opposition parties.

"The lies of the Mahajhootbandhan stand exposed by the CAG report," Union Minister Arun Jaitley wrote on Twitter.

"It cannot be that the Supreme Court is wrong, the CAG is wrong and only the dynast is right," he added.
