Chennai Cars Gutted in Fire

Chenna/Bengaluru: More than 450 cars have been gutted after "accidental" fire broke out in India's two leading cities in the last two days.

In the first incident, about 300 cars were burnt down at the parking area of Aero India 2019 air show in Bengaluru Saturday afternoon.

It is suspected that the fire near the Yelahanka air base in north Bengaluru, where about a hundred aircraft are parked for the biennial Aero India 2019 event, could have been caused by a lit cigarette disposed on the grass in the open field.

"The fire spread rapidly due to dry grass and strong winds. Hundreds of vehicles, including two-wheelers and cars, were seen parked in files in the open ground, surrounded by fire", local police officials said.

At the time of the incident more than 3000 vehicles were parked in the parking area. Vehicles in the line of fire were removed from the area by breaking the glass windows and releasing the parking brakes as drivers were not present and these cars were pushed to safety.

In another incident, more than 150 cars were gutted in Chennai after a fire engulfed a parking lot on the outskirts of Chennai Sunday afternoon. It is suspected that the fire may have spread due to dry grass catching fire.

"These cars were parked by a private company over the last one year. Some are new cars. The fire has been extinguished but smoke is still coming", a police official said.

There is a dispute on the actual number of cars destroyed in the Chennai fire. Most of the reports said a total of 150 cars were damaged. But, there are others who said the number of cars damaged in the fire is 175, there are still others who said the number is at least 200.
