Muslim reservation due to backwardness, not because of religion: Syed Shahabuddin
Chennai: Urging the Union government to provide 10 per cent quota for Muslims in employment and educational opportunities, the Tamil Nadu Thowheedh Jamaath (TNTJ) led by its founder P Jainul Abideen took out a huge rally and held a conference here on Sunday.
The rally witnessed participation of tens of hundreds of women besides thousands of men and youths. It began from Pallavan House on Anna Salai and ended at Island Grounds, the conference venue.
Citing the reports of Justice Rajendra Sachar and Ranganath Mishra Commissions, the conference said Muslims have been deprived of their rightful share in education and employment. The meet urged the Centre to provide 10 per cent exclusive quota for Muslims in employment in the Central and state governments besides the public and private sector organisations.
It also demanded the Centre to provide 10 per cent reservation for Muslims in all educational institutions including the centres of excellence like the Indian Institutes of Technology and the Indian Institutes of Managements.
Through a resolution, the meet appealed to the Centre to reserve 20 per cent of the posts for Muslims in the State police forces, intelligence agencies, Central Reserve Police Force, Border Security Force and the armed forces. Setting up of Muslim varsities, 10 per cent quota in the government welfare schemes were among the other demands.
"The representation of Muslims in both the Houses of Parliament and in State legislatures has been dwindling and 10 per cent of the constituencies should be reserved in the Lok Sabha, Rajya Sabha, State legislative assemblies and councils besides providing the same percentage of quota in all local bodies exclusively for Muslims," another resolution adopted by the Tamil Nadu Thowheedh Jamaath said.
Urging Chief Minister M Karunanidhi to increase the present exclusive reservation for Muslims in the State to seven per cent, the conference also appealed to him to use his good offices to persuade the Centre to implement the Ranganath Mishra Commission report.
