Former CAG Shunglu to probe CWG imbroglio

Finally, curtains came down on the Commonwealth Games. It was off to the breathtaking start on October 03 and had an equally impressive closing October 14. Though few weeks before the Games finally kicked-off were marred by controversies and allegations, it would be unfair if we do not acknowledge the unprecedented care the government at the state as well as the centre had taken to make the Games a great success. The Games would now certainly be remembered in history for its success, Indian hospitality and of course for the historic performances by our own sportspersons and athletics.

At the same time, the Games will also be remembered for the embarrassing situation, and accusations of large scale corruption that were making the headlines few weeks before the Games kicked off. The negligence on the part of the ignorant officials had certainly put us in such an awkward situation that at one time we were afraid if we would be able to actually host the Games on the Indian soil. Had it not been for the timely intervention by Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh and personal monitoring by Union Home Minister P Chidambaram to finalise the foolproof security arrangements, the moment of 'National Pride' that we are enjoying now could have easily been resulted in a 'National Shame'.

Hence, the success of the Commonwealth Games and the glowing tributes we are already receiving from different circles, should not stop the government from keeping the pledge that it had taken for taking action against those involved in the corruption charges, mismanagement and the gross negligence.

While we do the investigations into the corruption charges, we also need to look into the role played by those who were making fun of the situation when the entire country was praying for the success of the Games. These are the people who leave no opportunity lost to talk of National interests but have used 'communal riots' and 'bomb blasts' to gain political mileage and win elections. Far from assisting the government in improving the situation, they were mocking it. Suggestion to handover the CWG works to a 'certain Municipal Corporation' is something that the country has never seen in its history before. The reports about the steps the government is taking to look into the corruption charges are encouraging. Time now is also to discourage such type of politics.

Also, we should make sure that any probe that we are conducting to look into these matters is not futile - as we have seen on various occasions in the past. Corruption is weakening our roots, the fact has been admitted by the country's top leaderships on various occasions in the past. And recently by the Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh from different platforms. These admissions without actions have encouraged those involved in corruption. Giving them any further chance is deadly beyond imagination.
