Washington: In the latest of a series of controversial remarks on Twitter, US President-elect Donald Trump has criticized the United Nations, describing the global body as a “club” for people to “have a good time.”
“The United Nations has such great potential but right now it is just a club for people to get together, talk and have a good time. So sad!” he wrote in a tweet.
The message comes following a decision by President Obama to abstain from a UN Security Council vote condemning Israel's settlements in the Occupied Palestinian Territories, including East Jerusalem. The abstention marked a historic change in the US policy that permitted the resolution to pass.
Trump, who sought unsuccessfully to scuttle the measure in the Security Council, suggested Friday he will take a less solicitous approach toward the United Nations than President Obama has, tweeting: "Things will be different after Jan 20" with respect to the global body.
