
Mumbai: Amid violent protests after attempted rape of a minor girl in Talegaon, Nashik district, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and senior Maratha leader and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar have made passionate appeal to masses to ensure there is no disharmony in the society over the incident.
At the same time, Fadnavis assured that the case would be tried in a fast track court and and strict punishment to the accused.
A five-year-old girl was allegedly raped by a teenage boy at Trimbakeshwar near here which led to tension as angry villagers protested at several places in the district demanding his immediate arrest, police said today. The boy has been taken into custody, they said.
Later pobe said that the 16-year-old boy allegedly attempted to rape the girl at an isolated place at Talegaon village under Trimbakeshwar taluka in the district yesterday, Trimbakeshwar police station in-charge Mukund Deshmukh said.
As soon as the news spread, tension gripped Talegoan as locals gathered at the police station last night demanding that the boy be booked and arrested.
The villagers also staged 'rasta roko' in Wadovhare, Ghoti and Anjaneri-phata areas. Some people set tyres on fire, and also damaged a tractor in Talegaon.
A group of people also protested at Nashik Civil Hospital last night and demanded that the victim be examined by a woman doctor, Deshmukh said.
According to rural control room, some people staged rasta-rokos at Talwade village on Nashik-Trimbakeshwar road, Girnare village, which is about 10 kms from Nashik district headquarters, and near Mohadi on the busy Mumbai-Agra National Highway this morning against the incident.
Angry mob also burnt police vehicles, state transport buses and few private vehicles. Traffic was disturbed for hours.
Meanwhile, welcoming Maharashtra government's stand on the attempted rape of the minor girl in Talegaon, NCP President Sharad Pawar today appealed to masses to ensure there is no disharmony in the society over the incident.
"People are very angry due to the Nashik incident. At the same time, the government showed its will to take steps against the perpetrator of the crime and the police have arrested the accused," Pawar told reporters here today.
Pawar said people's anger can be understood but "there needs to be a full stop to it".
"People should ensure there is no disharmony in the society due to this issue. This state belongs to Shahu Maharaj, Mahatma Phule and (B R) Ambedkar. Thus, keeping their virtues in mind, people should remain calm and maintain peace," Pawar said.
