Mumbai: At least 22 people, including 04 members of a family, have died in Mumbai's Bhendi Bazzar area after a more than 117 years old six storey building collapsed Thursday morning, two days after heavy rains brought India's commercial capital to its knees.
Rescue operation is on and it is feared that the death toll may go up.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis visited the site and announced a compensation of Rs 5,00,000 to the kin of those who lost their lives. Fadnavis also ordered a detailed enquiry in the Husaini Building Collapse to Additional Chief Secretary (Housing).
Teams of the NDRF and the Fire Brigade are at the spot engaged in rescue operations. 90 NDRF personnel, dog squad, 10 fire tenders, two rescue vans and several ambulances are at the site of the collapse which has been categorised as a level III emergency by the fire brigade.
Some 34 people, including four firemen, are injured and have been rushed to hospital. 28 people have been rescued so far.
"There was a massive bang. We couldn't see anything due to the dust and smoke. Once the dust settled, we realised it was a building collapse," a resident said while talking to reporters.
At present the area has been cordoned off to carry out the evacuation process smoothly.
A playschool functioned on the ground floor of the Hussaini Building and about 50 children had a narrow escape when the building collapsed.
The structure collapsed just about 20 minutes before the playschool was to start at 09:00 am, the father of a two-year-old playschool-goer said.
Many victims have yet to be announced. But, JJ Hospital in a list released a little while ago released the names of the following victims:
