Nagpur: As many as 1,809 candidates, including 151 of the Congress, 150 of the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) and 10 of All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), have filed nomination papers for the February 21 election to the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC).
"On the last day of filing nominations Friday, as many as 1,533 candidates submitted their papers", NMC officials said.
The 151-member Nagpur Municipal Corporation is currently ruled by the BJP.
While the Congress is contesting all 151 seats, the BJP has fielded candidates in 150. One of the BJP candidates did not file his papers after being asked to contest from a ward he did not wish to contest.
The Shiv Sena is contesting 120 seats whereas the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) claimed to have distributed 145 B forms to party candidates.
Bahujan Samajwadi Party (BSP) has given AB forms to around 109 candidates.
“It is for the first time that Mayawati’s party has fielded so many candidates for the civic elections,” said BSP’s state general secretary Jitendra Mahiskar.
The All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) has fielded 10 candidates. The Hyderabad based party led by Asaduddin Owaisi which is contesting the Nagpur civic elections for the first time has fielded candidates in Ward No 03, 06, 11 and 30.
While Nazima Ikram Khan, Bahgyashree Pravin Kochade and Sandip Gaurishankar Meshram have been fielded in Ward No 03, Sayeed Begum Mohd Aslam and Swapnali Rajesh will contest as AIMIM candidates in Ward No 06.
Ramesh Fiske Patil and Shaheda Sameeullah Khan have filed nominations as AIMIM candidates in Nagpur Municipal Corporation Ward No. 11.
Likewise, Shahid Raza, Rubina Shaikh Mohd Yunus and Shabina Shaikh Shakeel are the AIMIM candidates who filed their nominations from Wad No 30 of Nagpur civic body.
According to NMC officials, they have received a total of 1,809 nomination forms between January 27 and February 3.
"Nomination procedure has come to end peacefully and we have received papers from all candidates", Additional municipal commissioner Ravindra Kumbhare said.
He said candidates can withdraw their names by February 7 till 3pm.
"After that the final list of candidates will come out and independent candidates will get the election symbols", he said.
"Distribution of symbols will be held from 11am on February 8", he added.
