Imphal: The lone Trinamool Congress MLA and one of the 28 Congress MLAs who won the 2017 state elections in Manipur have joined the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP), party leader Himanta Biswa Sarma claimed Sunday.

He also claimed that the BJP now has support of a total of 32 MLAs and hence in a strong position to form government in Manipur.

According to final results declared by the State Election Commission, no party has won the enough seat to form the government in the state. But, the ruling Congress with 28 members has emerged as the single largest party.

The BJP is second with 21 members. Naga Peoples Front and National People's Party have won 04 seats each. All India Trinamool Congress, Lok Jan Shakti Party and Independen won on 01 seat each.

The BJP earlier in the day claimed support from three NDA constituents -- the National People's Party (NPP), the Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) and the Naga People's Front (NPF).

With Congress and TMC MLAs joining the BJP, the party's strenght will go to 32 - the number enough to form a government in the state.

In its response, the Congress accused the Modi government of subverting democracy in Manipur.

"As per the Constitution and norms, the single largest party is always invited to form the government. The Modi government through the Governors, who are acting as its stooges, is subverting the law and democracy," Congress' chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala said here.

"Federalism and the rule of law being murdered in broad daylight by the Modi Government," he alleged.

He also alleged the BJP was misusing the CISF and airport authorities to detain and abduct an Independent MLA travelling with an outgoing Congress minister from Imphal to Kolkata.

"The BJP is now misusing CISF and airport authorities to detain and abduct Independent MLA (Jiribam seat) Ashab Uddin at Imphal airport," he said, adding that the legislator was travelling with outgoing minister Abdul Nasir.

Congress general secretary C P Joshi, who is in charge of party affairs in Manipur, has been camping in the state, according to PTI.
