Chennai: A lawyer in Madras High Court, who contested the Tamil Nadu Assembly polls in 2006 on a BJP ticket, was arrested on Sunday on charges of sexually abusing a nine-year-old child onboard a Thiruvananthapuram-Chennai train.
Following the complaint of the child, Erode Railway Police arrested the accused under Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act on Sunday and later remanded in judicial custody.
The accused has been identified as KP Prem Ananth, an advocate. He was a BJP candidate from RK Nagar constituency, in Chennai, during 2006 assembly election. The accused allegedly assaulted the minor girl when she was asleep. The victim woke up and shouted, following which her family nabbed him, according to ANI.
Though holding an ordinary ticket, the accused lawyer did not have reservation and boarded the reserved compartment occupying the berth opposite to where the child and her family was sleeping, police said according to Indian Express.
“We have spoken to the other passengers. When he was nabbed by the passengers, he threatened them by saying that he is a lawyer and well-connected in BJP. He was handed over to railway police at Erode,” said the official.
The incident came to light days after nationwide outrage against rape and murder of two minor girls in Kathua, Jammu & Kashmir and Surat, Gujarat, and another incident of rape in Unnao in Uttar Pradesh.
A BJP MLA has been arrested in Unnao rape case while two BJP ministers were forced to resign after they were found participating in a rally organized in support of the rapists in Jammu. Incidentally, lawyers associated with Kathua Bar Council too supported the alleged rapists of the 08-year-old minor girl and even tried to prevent the police from filing the charge sheet against the accused.
The government only two days ago had approved an ordinance to allow courts to award death penalty to those convicted of raping children up to 12 years of age. The ordinance has also been signed by President Kovind.
