Tripoli: Older people in Libya who have never performed Hajj will be able to do the pilgrimage this year, after being given priority during the registration process.
Head of Libya's General Authority of Islamic Affairs and Endowments Abbas al-Qadi told the Libyan News Agency (WAL) that 4,200 of the elderly, representing 60 percent of the total number of pilgrims, will perform Hajj this year.
He added that members of the martyrs' families and amputees will number 1050, while as many as 1,600 ordinary pilgrims will be selected by a draw of lots.
Al-Qadi affirmed that the authority has taken measures this year to avoid the mistakes of the past years, especially with regard to the elderly.
"In this area", he said, "The authority will benefit from the experience of workers in care homes for the elderly as well as the experience of scouts who serve the elderly pilgrims in the holy places in Saudi Arabia."
