Malegaon/Mumbai: At least five people were beaten to death on suspicion of being child lifters in a village of Dhule district in North Maharashtra on Sunday, police said. The incident occurred at Rainpada village in Dhule district.
The five, along with a few others, were seen getting down from a state transport bus in the tribal Rainpada hamlet. When one of them apparently tried to speak to a girl child, villagers, who had gathered for the weekly Sunday bazaar, pounced on them, news agency PTI said quoting local police.
"Five were killed in the mob fury," police said adding that the bodies are being taken to the nearby Pimpalner hospital.
Eyewitnesses said the villagers armed with stones and sticks surrounded the five men and started to beat them. The victims were also locked in a room and beaten again, and later succumbed to their injuries.
The video of the incident viral on the social media showed the five men lying inside a room in a pool of blood. The head of at least two victims are smashed.
The incident comes in the backdrop of a spate of similar such incidents in several parts of the country when people were either attacked or lynched on suspicion that they were child abductors.
There were rumours for the last few days in Dhule and adjoining cities that a gang of child lifters was active in the area.
Two days ago Malegaon police had registerted a case against 10 people who were involved in attacking a man and damaging his vehicle on the suspicion of being child lifters, according to ASP Harsh Poddar. In another incident in the city, 02 beggars were beaten after rumors that an eight year old child has been abducted. "We have registered case against 04 for taking law into their hands", Poddar said.
