Lucknow: The Samajwadi Party (SP) on Wednesday won Gorakhpur and Phulpur parliamentary seats defeating the riling Bhartiya Janata Pary (BJP) candidates by huge margins.
Praveen Kumar Nishad won the Gorakhpur Lok Sabha seat, which was held by UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath for the last 19 years, by more than 25,000 votes. Nagendra Pratap Singh Patel won the Phulpur Lok Sabha seat, which was represented by Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya, by over 59,000 votes.
In Gorakhpur, Samajwadi Party candidate Praveen Kumar Nishad got 3,34,463 votes as against BJP's Upendra Dutt Shukla who has so far polled 3,08,593 votes, the Election Commission data showed after the final round of counting.
in Phulpur, Samajwadi Party's Nagendra Pratap Singh Patel bagged 337,680 votes as against BJP's Kaushlendra Singh Patel who is second with 280,528 votes after 31st round of counting. He kept the lead maintained and defeated the BJP candidate by some 59,600 votes.
The BSP had extended its support to the SP candidates in both the seats whereas there are reports of tacit understanding of the Congress with the SP. There are around 5.5 lakh Scheduled Caste (SC) voters in the Phulpur constituency, who have traditionally voted for the BSP.

In Gorakhpur parliamentary seat, BJP's Upendra Dutt Shukla has so far got 15,577 votes whereasSP's Praveen Kumar Nishad is second with 13,911 votes after third round of vote count. It means BJP's Shukla is leading by just 1,666 votes.
Likewise, Samajwadi Party's Nagendra Pratap Singh Patel is leading by just 1,058 votes in Phulpur. He got 22,460 votes so far whereas BJP's Kaushlendra Singh Patel is at a close second with 21,402 votes.

08:00 am Counting of votes in Gorakhpur and Phulpur - two parliamentary seats in Uttar Pradesh where by elections were held on Sunday started today at 08:00 am.
Counting of votes for the Gorakhpur Lok Sabha by-elections started at Gorakhpur University at 8am. A total of 14 tables are provided for counting of votes and will be done through 34 rounds. The process began with counting of postal ballots.
07:15 am Counting of votes in Gorakhpur and Phulpur - two parliamentary seats in Uttar Pradesh where by elections were held on Sunday will begin today at 08:00 am, according to the State Election Commission.
The poll panel said the process will begin with counting of postal ballots. Around 15 tables will be used at each counting centre in different assembly segments. Though the final result will be announced by today afternoon, trends and leads will start coming by 08:30 am when the first round of counting is expected to end.
Gorakhpur is the parliamentary constituency and stronghold of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. Similarly, Phulpur is the parliamentary constituency of Keshav Prasad Maurya. Adityanath and Maurya both resigned from the parliament to become Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, thus necessitating the by-elections.
According to the State Election Office, 47 per cent of the voters exercised their franchise in Gorakhpur, whereas the turnout in Phulpur was lower at 38 per cent. "The state recorded an overall polling of 42 per cent in the two seats", Joint Chief Election Officer R C Rai said.
Around 40 candidates had filed their nomination papers for the by-polls to these seats, including BJP candidates Upendra Shukla and Kaushalendra Singh Patel, Samajwadi Party’s Pravin Nishad and Nagendra Singh Patel, and Congress candidates Sureetha Kareem and Manish Mishra. The BSP has extended its support to the SP candidates in both the seats whereas there are reports of tacit understanding of the Congress with the SP.
In Gorakhpur parliamentary constituency, there were 970 polling centres and 2141 polling booths, while in Phulpur, there were 793 polling centres and 2059 polling booths. There are 19.61 lakh voters in Phulpur parliamentary constituency, while there are 19.49 lakh electorate for Gorakhpur Lok Sabha seat. As many as 4,728 Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) machines were used in the bypoll and provisions for webcasting from 95 critical booths were also been made, according to the Election Commission.
Along with Gorakhpur and Phulpur in Uttar Pradesh, by elections were also held in Araria parliamentary seat, and Bhabua and Jehanabad assembly constituencies in Bihar. Counting of votes here is also being done today.
