Hyderabad: After Congress President Rahul Gandhi and BJP's Smriti Irani, All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) President and Hyderabad MP, Asaduddin Owaisi, held a series of "women only" meetings in Old Hyderabad to reach out to them ahead of the Telangana assembly elections.
The AIMIM has so far organised such meetings in the constituencies of Malakpet, Bahadurpura, Tolichowki, Charminar, Yakutpura and Nampally. The next meeting is planned at Chandrayangutta, party sources said.
"For the elections, AIMIM is organising women-only events in each constituency. The events allow me and the party candidate to listen to the problems of women voters and work harder for them," Asaduddin Owaisi, who has been listening to the grievances of women at the meetings, said.
Congress President Rahul Gandhi had attended in August an interactive meeting here with the members of women Self-Help Groups (SHGs). A month later in September, BJP leader and Union Minister Smriti Irani had also addressed a women's meeting organised by the party near Medak, according to PTI.
AIMIM has so far declared candidates for eight Assembly segments in the city - none of them a woman. It had seven members in the recently-dissolved Assembly.
In a further twist to Hyderabad elections, the BJP has fielded Syed Shahezadi, a Muslim woman, as its candidate from Chandrayangutta constituency in Hyderabad, to take on AIMIM leader and Asaduddin Owaisi's younger brother Akbaruddin Owaisi.
The Assembly elections in Telangana to elect new 119-member assembly will be held on Friday December 07, 2018. Counting of votes will be done on December 11, 2018.
