Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh Police on Friday booked 271 people by Chandwak police in Jaunpur on charges of promoting conversion to the Christianity and spreading misinformation about Hinduism.
“The FIR was lodged on Wednesday against a total of 271 persons for various penal offences like cheating, defiling places of worship and prejudicing national integration,” Press Trust of India quoted Additional Superintendent of Police Anil Kumar Pandey.
Among those named in the FIR are Durga Prasad Yadav, Kirit Rai and Jitendra Ramone. All of them are believed to be the natives of Jaunpur. The police swung into action after an order from a court, where a Hindu Jagran Manch (HJM) worker filed a petition seeking action against them.
The complaint is filed by Advocate Brijesh Singh. According to his complaint, the men accused of promoting conversions have been persuading residents of Jaunpur, Varanasi, Azamgarh and Ghazipur districts to visit a church in Baldeh village to attend the Christian prayers there.
Singh had moved the court on August 02, 2018 seeking its direction to the police for lodging the FIR in the matter. On August 31, 2018 the court ordered the police to file an FIR and investigate the matter further, PTI said in a report.
