Muzaffarnagar Riot

Muzaffarnagar: A local court Friday sentenced to life imprisonment 07 Muslims convicted of killing 02 people in Kawal village in an attack which is believed to have triggered the Muzaffarnagar riots in 2013.

The sentence was pronounced by additional district judge Himanshu Bhatnagar.

The seven Muslims are Muzammil, Mujassim, Furkan, Nadeem, Jahangir, Afzal and Iqbal. They were convicted of killing two youngsters Gaurav and Sachin by the court Wednesday.

The murder had triggered riots in the town that spread to Western UP, leading to an unprecedented communal tension between the Jats and Muslims in the region. Sixty three people had lost their lives and more than 50,000 people had migrated to safer places - a majority of them Muslims. Many are still living in shelters.

The Muzaffarngar court ruling came on a day when the reports came that the Yogi Adityanath government in Uttar Pradesh has sought withdrawal of 38 cases against more than 100 people who are accused of the riots in the area. SP government under which Muzaffarnagar riots took place in 2013 had filed 131 cases against those involved. The Yogi government has earlier asked for withdarwal of 18 cases against the accused.

“Three days ago, I received withdrawal application in 18 cases of Muzaffarnagar riots from the state law department. It will soon be sent to court after examining records. These cases were lodged under Rioting, Arms Act and dacoity charges. No public representatives are accused in any of them" a local official told media on January 26.

Meanwhile, Naseer Ali, lawyer of the Muslims, who were awarded life imprisonment Friday, said he will challenge the verdict in the Allahabad HC and will continue to pursue the case till his clients come clean out of the court.
