Assam Jamiat chief joins Congress

Guwahati: In a major boost to the ruling Congress' minority vote bank in Assam, president of the All Assam Jamiate M R Madani today formally joined the party.

Madani led a group of 3000 supporters to join the Congress at a function at the Rajiv Bhawan here.

Speaking to reporters after the function, Madani said he was attracted by the ideology of the Congress and had full faith in the leader of state, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi.

''If any party can work for the welfare of the Muslim community, it is the Congress,'' he said.
