Chandni Chowk redevelopment plan cleared
Friday June 14, 2013 11:02 PM, IANS

After hanging fire for six years, the makeover plan for Delhi's Chandni Chowk will finally see the light of the day with the Unified Traffic and Transportation Infrastructure giving its nod to it, said officials.

"The Shahajahanabad Redevelopment Plan was sent to Unified Traffic And Transportation Infrastructure and has been approved by it," said Delhi government sources.

The Delhi cabinet had approved the plan in 2007 with an aim to revive the lost glory of Shahajahanabad, which was built by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan. Chandni Chowk is the congested part of the walled city.

According to officials, the work will be carried out in two phases by the state's Public Works Department.

In the first phase, dangling power cables will be laid underground and heritage lights will be installed. Pedestrian paths will also be created on the 1.3 km long thoroughfare of Chandni Chowk.

The Delhi government will have to inform the high court about the approval so that work can be started soon, said officials.
