New Delhi: Qaiser Shamim, a former IRS officer, has been elected new Chairman of the Central Haj Committee of India in a meeting of the Haj Committee members held at India Islamic Cultural Centre Wednesday.
The meeting was called by the Ministry of External Affairs, a nodal authority for Haj affairs and proposed the name of Qaiser Shamim for the post.
Qaiser Shamim is a former IRS officer of 1974 batch. He was last posted as Chief Commissioner of Income-tax, New Delhi. He has earlier worked as Joint Secretary (Exports), Ministry of Textiles.
It is learnt that the parliamentarians and others belonging to various political and social groups were angry over the proposal of a former bureaucrat for the post, and the meeting was disrupted on the issue at least for three times. After hours of discussions, however, the appointment of Qaiser Shamim was confirmed.
In the past, the chairman of the Central Haj Committee has never been a bureaucrat. Last time the post was occupied by senior Congress leader and former minister Mrs Mohsina Qedwai.
The meeting also elected Mohd Marghoob Ahmed of Kerala and Norul Islam, an MP from West Bengal, as vice chairman.
