Togo: Two popular African footballers; Emmanuel Emenike and Emmanuel Adebayor converted to Islam over the weekend, and their story of being a staunch Muslim and observing Ramadan fast, went viral on the internet and social networking sites, media reports said.
Emmanuel Adebayor converted to Islam on Sunday when he was sighted taking the Shahada - the Islamic creed declaring belief in the oneness of God and the acceptance of Mohammad as Allah's Prophet (peace be upon him).
He was pictured in an all white outfit standing close to an Imam as other Muslim leaders and supporters witnessed the occasion.
The ceremony is thought to have been held in Togo, Adebayor’s adoptive country.
An amateur camera revealed 31-year-old footballer took shahada at an event in his country. Some Tottenham fans suggested that Adebayor may want to play in another club in the new season.
Having played in many leading clubs such as Metz, Monaco, Arsenal, Manchester City and Real Madrid, Adebayor was elected was African footballer of the year 2008.
On the other hand, Emenike announced his conversion during a conversation with a coach of his club Vitor Pereira, according to Daily Post.
The top scorer at AFCON 2013 was absent when the squad had breakfast on Saturday, prompting the manager to ask his whereabouts.
Emenike said: “I’m fasting”
Pereira replied: “You’re not a Muslim.”
Emenike insisted: “I became a Muslim, I am a Muslim.”
The super Eagles striker plays for Fenerbache of Turkey. Turkey is a predominantly Islamic country.
