Mumbai: The moon sighting committees or the Hilal Committees in different parts of India are busy meeting today i.e. Wednesday Shaban 29, 1436 after the sunset to confirm if the new moon of the holy fasting month of Ramadan is sighted in any part of the country.
A formal announcement about when the month of Ramadan will begin in India is expected in few hours time.
The task of the moon sighting committees to confirm the sighting of the crescent has become difficult as weather in most of the country is cloudy, and clear sky is eluding majority of the cities and townships.
Earlier different moon sighting committees or Hilal Committees, as they are popularly known as, including Markazi Rooyat Hila Committee Mumbai, Hilal Committee New Delhi, Hilal committees in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, Jamiat-e-Ulema Hind, Hilal committees in Assam, West Bengal, Gujarat, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka had made special appeals to the people to sight the new moon.
The Hijri date is the Islamic calendar which started in the moon year in which Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) immigrated from Makkah to Madinah. A new month in the Hijri calendar begins with sighting of the moon on 29th of every month. If the moon is not sighted on 29th, that month completes 30 days.
Saudi Arabia, UAE and other Gulf states have already announced that the Ramadan 2015 in these countries will begin from Thursday June 18, 2015.
Muslims in the Middle East, Europe and the US will be anxiously waiting for the announcement of advent of the holy month as majority of the Muslims in the Western countries follow Saudi Arabia’s Islamic Hijri calendar.
