Violence erupted in Kandhla and part of Shamli - the communally sensitive region in Western Uttar Pradesh, on Saturday over an attack on a group of Tablighi Jamaat allegedly by Jat youths in Delhi-Kandhla train on Friday near Baghpat.

According to the Shamli Superintendent of Police Vijay Bhushan, agitated members of the minority community gathered outside the Kandhla Police station, demanding the immediate arrest of the culprits.
He said the mob indulged in violence, pelting stones on the police station and setting police vehicles on fire, an allegation which the Shamli Samajwadi Party MLA Nahid Hasan denied.
Meerut Zone IG Alok Sharma however said the agitated mob attacked the Kandhla police station following rumours that three of the people staging a protest on the tracks near the Kandhla railway station had been killed in police firing.
The police had earlier also arrested five people for attacking the people belonging Tablighi Jamaat.
The attack has reminded a “series of provocative attacks” on different religious communities that took place in the run-up to the Muzaffarnagar riots in 2013.
