Thane: A major fire broke out at a factory-cum-residential complex in Bhiwandi powerloom town of Thane district here on Tuesday, officials said.
According to Thane Police, several people are feared trapped and efforts are on to rescue them before the blaze spreads to the upper floors of the four-storied building.
Local reports said that nearly 20 people have been rescued so far but over 50 others are still trapped in the building.
The city fire brigade has sent six fire tenders, ambulances four water tankers to fight the conflagration which started around 7 a.m. in the Saeed building located in the Kazipura area of the town.
"We rushed to the spot as soon as we were informed about the fire. There are no other exits in the building and residents rushed to terrace for safety. Unless and untill the fire is doused they cannot be rescued", said a Bhiwandi fire officer.
"As of now no casualty has been reported", he added.
The garment factory and its godown is situated on the first floor of the building. The second and third floor houses residential apartments.
