Lucknow: Set to contest the assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh for the first time, the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) is contemplating pre-poll alliance and talks in this regard are on with various political parties, state president of the party said Sunday.
"We are talking with different political parties for a pre-poll alliance in Uttar Pradesh. Details in this regard would be made public by AIMIM Chief Asaduddin Owaisi at an appropriate time", AIMIM Uttar Pradesh president Shoukat Ali said while talking to a Hindi daily.
He said that no alliance will be made at the cost of party ideology.
"We are ready to work with any political party which is committed to the welfare of Muslims and Dalits", he added.
Shoukat Ali also said that the party has strong base in more than 400 assembly constituencies and is becoming stronger with every passing day.
"We have built up bases in as many as 403 assembly constituencies. We also have a list of 100 candidates who are seeking party ticket to contest the upcoming state polls", he said.
"Consultation with the top AIMIM leadership in this regard is underway. The first list of AIMIM candidates for Uttar Pradesh would be out by December end or January first week", he said.
Shoukat also slammed the ruling Samajwadi Party (SP) and the opposition Bahujan Samajwadi Party (BSP) for their policies towards Muslims.
"The two parties had always used Muslims for their own interests but did nothing for their welfare. The people of Uttar Pradesh will give them a befitting reply in the 2017 state elections", he said.
The Hyderabad based AIMIM is led by Asaduddin Owaisi. The party has a strong base in Hyderabad. It earlier contested state and civic elections in Maharashtra and also state elections in Bihar. Though the party could not win any seat in Bihar, it surprised political observers by its performance in Maharashtra.
Ahead of the state polls in Uttar Pradesh, the AIMIM also fielded candidates in panchayat polls and won on few seats.
Uttar Pradesh which has a total of 404 assembly seats is due for elections in early 2017. The term of the present assembly which has a Samajwadi Party (SP) majority ends in May 2017.
