Rahul Gandhi attacked in Gujarat

New Delhi:
Congress Vice-President Rahul Gandhi's car was on Friday pelted with stones by a mob when he was touring the flood hit areas Gujarat. The incident happened in Banaskantha area where Rahul Gandhi was also shown black flags.

Window panes of the car were broken in the attack, but Rahul Gandhi escaped unhurt as he was sitting in the front seat. Rahul was travelling with SPG commandos some of whom were reportedly injured in the attack as they were sitting in the back.

The news was confirmed by Congress Spokesperson Randeep Surjewala who took to Twitter to share the pictures of the incident. The senior party leader said it was a disgusting and disgraceful act.

“BJP goons attack Cong VP Rahulji’s car in Lal Chowk, Dhanera, Banaskanta, Gujarat. Disgusting & disgraceful", Surjiwala said.

"Rahulji is an SPG protectee. An attack under Gujarat BJP Govt's watch reflects not only serious lapse but tacit complicity. Will PM answer?", he asked.

Gandhi also faced hostile black-flag waving crowd shouting slogans in favour of Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his tour of flood-hit Dhanera town, forcing the Congress to cancel a scheduled public meeting.

Indirectly blaming Prime Minister Modi Rahul Gandhi soon after the incident said stones cannot stop him from serving the people.

Condemning the attack on Congress Vice President, former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh said, "Political violence has no place in a functioning democracy."

Congress General Secretary Ghulam Nabi accused the BJP for the incident.

"This is being done deliberately by the BJP to create an atmosphere of fear in Gujarat just before the assembly eletcions. It is yet another example of intolerance exhibited by BJP and its workers openly", Azad said..

In his reaction, senior Congress leader Jyotiraditya Scindia wrote of his twitter account @JM_Scindia, "Attack on @OfficeOfRG absolutely shameful and unacceptable. We will not be deterred by such cowardly attempts to instil fear in us!"

The BJP, however, said it was an unfortunate incident and the party had no role to play in it. “This is absolutely false. If any incident has happened it is unfortunate. I don’t think BJP is behind this, said BJP MP Jagdambika Pal.

Banaskantha, one of the areas in Gujarat worst-affected by the flood, is represented by six Congress lawmakers but none of them have visited their constituencies. They are at a resort in Bengaluru - an attempt by the Congress to protect them from being poached before the Rajya Sabha polls on Tuesday. The Congress flew 43 Gujarat lawmakers to Bengaluru last Friday to prevent more defections after six of its legislators quit.

Senior Congress leader Ahmed Patel, Congress president Sonia Gandhi's advisor, faces a tough contest on one of the three Rajya Sabha seats in Gujarat, as he seeks re-election into the upper house. He tweeted today: "Attack on an SPG protectee is yet another manifestation of BJP's frustration and government's absolute failure to protect law and order in Gujarat."
