Cow Shelter

Raipur:
Chhattisgarh Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Harish Verma, who was arrested after the death of nearly 300 cows at his cow shelters, routinely sold dead cattle to butchers and traded in their skin and bones, according to police.

“The Gau Sewa Ayog’s allegation was found to be true,” Durg inspector general of police Deepanshu Kabra told Hindustan Times on Saturday.

“Some of the accused have given statements that dead cows were sold to butchers. Details will come out soon,” said Kabra.

Kabra was referring to the allegations levelled by Gau Sewa Ayog, official body for bovine welfare, against Verma in its complaint to the police.

Harish Verma had however accused the state government for the mess and said his appeals for funds were met with deaf ears.

"My cow shelter is overcrowded. There are more than 650 cows against the capacity of 220. I had intimated the government many a times that I am not able feed them, but all went in vain. More than Rs. 10 lakh meant for the cow shelter is pending with the government and they have not granted it till now. I am not guilty for the deaths", Vermas said while talking to reporters after the incident came to light.
