Madurai: In a huge setback for Tamil Nadu government, the Jallikattu event was called off at Alanganallur in this district over fierce opposition from the local people, Sunday.
The officials were forced to cancel the bull taming event in Alanganallur, after the agitators blocked all the seven roads leading to the village in a bid to prevent officials from entering into it. The villagers have created roadblocks by cutting down roadside trees and keeping huge boulders on the roads. Vehicles were also not allowed to enter Alanganallur by the locals.
"We will not allow anybody, including the Chief Minister to enter Alanganallur either to hold negotiations or conduct Jallikattu," the protesters said.
In view of stiff resistance from the protesters in Alanganallur, who has been agitating over the last one week, Chief Minister O.Paneerselvam was forced to cancel his visit to Alanganallur to flag off Jallikattu, this morning.
Facing protest from Alanganallur people, Paneerselvam had planned to inaugurate Jallikattu at Natham Kovilpatti in neighbouring Dindigul district this noon, but however was again forced to cancel the visit after the peoples' resistance.
The Dindigul district administration had made all arrangements for conducting Jallikattu at Natham Kovilpatti last night itself as an alternative to Alanganallur. But, hundreds of people after knowing the Chief Minister programme laid a siege to "Vaadivaasal" and forced the Collector T.G.Vinay and Superintendent of Police A.Saravanan to cancel the event.
In view of the peoples' resistance, the Chief Minister, who arrived here last night, held a review meeting with his Cabinet Colleagues and senior government officials in a private hotel here to take stock of the situation.
BJP State President Tamilisai Soundararajan also met Paneerselvam and held discussions.
Owing to fierce opposition from the people for holding the State-sponsored Jallikattu events in Madurai and Dindigul, Panneerselvam is likely to return to Chennai later in the day.
