Mumbai: Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s claim in Motihari, Bihar on April 10 that the state built 8.5 lakh toilets in a week’s time is inviting both gasps and ridicule on social media and also by his political adversaries.

Speaking in Motihari, Bihar on Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi made the startling declaration that during the previous week, as many as 8,50,000 toilets were built in Bihar, undoubtedly inspired by him.

"In the past one week, over 8.5 lakh toilets have been constructed in Bihar and that is not an easy task to do. The speed and development is not a mean feat. This proves that soon Bihar would catch up with the national average," PM Modi had told a gathering of around 20,000 swachhagrahis or cleanliness ambassadors at the concluding ceremony of Champaran Satyagraha centenary celebrations in Bihar's Motihari.

People on Twitter predictably were sceptical. One of them, Edward Anderson, quipped that it was indeed impressive to manufacture 84 toilets in 60 seconds! “It has been pointed out that constructing 8.5 lakh toilets in a week equates to: 121,428 a day, 5,059 an hour and 84 a minute. 1.4 every second. Impressive.

RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav in fact was among the first to counter Narendra Modi's claim. Taking to Twitter soon after his speech, Yadav listed down a clutch of calculations that arrived at the conclusion that 8.5 lakh toilets in a week would mean over 84 toilets were built in a minute. He also took a dig, saying it was a "big goof-up" by PM Modi.

Tejaswi Yadav was followed by Mumbai Congress chief Sanjay Nirupam who took a swipe at PM Modi's remarks, saying it wasn't "humanly possible to construct toilets at such high speed".

"8.5 lac toilets in a week? That means 1.4 toilets every second. I don't think its humanly possible to construct toilets at such high speed. But it is very much possible for PM Modi to make such false claims at the fag end of his government," he tweeted.

The Prime Minister’s penchant for magnifying achievements may have prompted him to overstate the claim. Because the CEO and Mission Director of Bihar’s ‘Lohia Swachh Bihar Abhiyan’ Balamurugan D told the BBC that the toilets were actually built over a period of four weeks. And this was preceded by preparatory work over the previous one and a half years.

Modi was recently in news after he claimed that 600 crore Indians had elected him to power. Modi claimed this even as Indian population stands at 125 crore, of them 814.5 million were registered voters. Moreover, according to 2014 election record only a little over 30% people voted for the BJP.

"In 2014, after three decades, 600 crore Indian voters for the first time gave complete majority to a political party to form a government at the Centre...," Modi said while addressing the gathering of leaders at the World Economic Forum's plenary session in Davos.
