Bengaluru: Mahesh Vikram Hegde, Founder Editor of right-wing propaganda website Postcard News was booked by Crime Branch of Bengaluru Police for spreading fake news and was arrested in Bengaluru Thursday. Hegde has been booked under sections 153A, 295A and 120B of the IPC.
Mahesh Hegde was behind the fake news published on Postcard News about a Jain monk being attacked by Muslims in Bengaluru. The Jain monk was injured in an accident. However, Postcard News had published a report claiming that the monk was attacked by Muslims. The report was accompanied by the photographs of the injured monk.
Hegde, who is followed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi besides others, had also tweeted the report with the image of the injured Jain monk saying "no one is safe in Siddaramiah's Karnataka," but the fake news was soon busted.

Mahesh Hegde was arrested for peddling fake news about a "Jain Muni" and trying to polarise Karnataka.

Police later confirmed that the news published on the website was fake. The arrest came after a leader of the state's ruling Congress filed a complaint against the Postcard News and its founder. The portal had been charged with publishing content that incites communal hate in the past too.
Postcard News is known for creating fake news and carrying reports that polarise communities. The website is reported to be promoted by senior BJP leaders. This is perhapse why senior BJP leaders, including Union Minister Anantkumar Hegde, have come openly in support of Mahesh Hegde.
"Shame on the state government led by @siddaramaiah which is behaving in dictatorial terms in arresting @mvmeet. Ensure to follow the true democratic spirit in fighting us rather than doing a coward act", Union Minister Hegde said in a tweet posted after the Postcard News editor's arrest.
