
Gorakhpur: At least 13 children were killed today and eight others injured when their school van was hit by a train at an unmanned railway crossing in Uttar Pradesh's Kushinagar district, an official said.
The children, students of Divine Public School, were killed on the spot when Thawe-Kapatanganj passenger train (55075) crashed into the van at an unmanned crossing gate at Behpurva, PTI quoted spokesperson for Railways Ved Prakash as saying.
A total of 22 students were travelling in the Tata Magic School Van. The remaining including the driver of the van, who suffered injuries were immediately shifted to the nearby hospital for further treatment.
Reacting to the incident, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed his deepest condolences and announced an ex-gratia of Rs two lakh each to the family members of the deceased and ordered an inquiry by the Gorakhpur commissioner.
President Kovind has expressed shock over the accident. "Shocked to learn about the horrific accident involving a bus carrying innocent schoolchildren in Kushinagar, Uttar Pradesh. Thoughts and prayers with the bereaved families and with those injured", he said in a tweet.
Meanwhile, the government has ordered a probe into the tragic accident. "I have asked senior officials to conduct an inquiry into the incident. Railways will provide an ex-gratia amount of Rs 2 lakh each to families of the deceased", Union Railways Minister Piyush Goyal in a tweet.
