New Delhi: AIUDF Chief and MP Badruddin Ajmal Qasmi in a late night statement issued yesterday backtracked from his comments made during his speech in the Lok Sabha - the lower house of the Indian Parliament Thursday.
Badruddin Ajmal Qasmi in a written statement said whatever he spoke about "his Salafi brothers" in the Parliament was "slip of tongue", "unintentional" and "far from truth".
"It was a horrible and unintentional mistake on my part occurred due to slip of tongue. My utterances about Salafis vis-à-vis terrorism were without any basis and far from truth", Badruddin Ajmal Qasmi said in a signed statement issued on his official letter head.
“It was never my intention that my Salafi brothers are involved or support terrorism. I backtrack from my words and apologise to my Salafi brothers”, he said.
Badruddin Ajmal Qasmi also said that he has written to the Lok Sabha secretariat to expunge the controversial parts of his speech from the Parliament’s record.
Interestingly, while Badruddin Ajmal Qasmi was spreading lies about Salafis, he was unable to reply a simple question posed by Meenakshi Lekhi - a woman MP of BJP who was quoting from the Holy Quran.
Badruddin Ajmal Qasmi backtracked from his comments after all round condemnation his speech delivered during a debate on Triple Talaq bill in the Lok Sabha on Thursday had received. The social media was also on fire and angry reactions were posted on WhatsApp and Telegram slamming the AIUDF Chief and Assam MP.
“It would have been better if you were absent this time too”, a WhatsApp user wrote reminding Qasmi of his absence from the Parliament when the Triple Talaq bill was introduced in the house last year.
Others on the social media accused Badruddin Ajmal Qasmi of lying in the Parliament and misleading the house. “It is shameful for a cleric, who is also a Member of Parliament, to behave in such an irresponsible manner”, Nisar Ahamad, wrote endorsing Ashar Naeem who rejected Badruddin Ajmal Qasmi’s apology "tendered on a piece of paper".
It is for the second time in a day when Badruddin Ajmal Qasmi had to tender apology for his irresponsible utterances. Early Thursday morning Badruddin Ajmal Qasmi was forced to apologise to a journalist after he lodged a police complaint against him.
In his complaint lodged Wednesday, the journalist had accused Badurddin Ajmal Qasmi of abusing and threatening him in public. A video of the entire episode is also leaked on internet where Badruddin Ajmal Qasmi – a graduate from Darul Uloom Deoband, is seen abusing and threatening the journalist in response to a simple question.
