New Delhi: Union Human Resource Development Minister (HRD) Prakash Javadekar on Saturday confirmed the government decision to conduct NEET (UG) and JEE (Main) - two high profile entrance exams conducted for admission to medical and enfineering courses, will be held two times in a year.
"The JEE and NEET examinations will now take place twice a year", Javadekar said in a press conference on Saturday in New Delhi.
“The National Testing Agency (NTA) will conduct them this year. The same student can take the exam both times a year and the best score will be counted,” he added.
Javadeker also said that all examinations under the National Testing Agency (NTA) will be computer-based.
“Computer centres will be set up where students with no access to computers can practise from August-end or September", he said.
“Students have been demanding this. As the exams happen once in a year and if some mishap happens during that day than the entire year gets wasted due to which this decision has been taken”.
He added that the students will have an option to take the JEE (Main) and NEET (UG) exam twice a year.
According to the tentative schedule, JEE (Main) will be held in January 2019 and April 2019. On the other hand, NEET (UG) will take place in February 2019 and May 2019 and UGC-NET will be held in December 2018.
ummid.com was among the first to report that the Modi government is planning to conduct NEET (UG) and JEE (Main) twice a year. ummid.com had also reported that IIT Kanpur has been assigned the task of providing technical support to NTA and it is being said that the exam pattern and syllabus will remain the same for the upcoming exam which will be held in the online mode.
Until now, such entrance exams were conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) in online as well as offline modes. In case, official announcements for the same are made, medical aspirants need to prepare for the online mode as well.
How will this initiative by HRD Ministry benefit students
A large number of students, every year, attend these NEET and JEE exams in the hope to get through the top medical and engineering colleges of India. Still most of them are not able to make through it, as one of the major reasons being the clash of dates. Yes! April and May is time when all the boards conduct their final examinations. And many a times it happens that the entrance examination and the board examination fall on a same date, creating a confusion and chaos among the students.
But this initiative will eliminate this problem forever, as there will be two entrance examinations conducted, so that students can give their best and get through best colleges in their own respective fields.
Major Advantage of conducting exams twice a year
Already true to almost everyone’s knowledge, every year a large group of students take a drop, to give a try in the upcoming entrance, and fulfil that desire, which they could not achieve on the present stage. This “twice a year” initiative will help the entire student community who, unwillingly choose to drop a year and prepare further in a better way for the same. It will ultimately save the year they planned to drop.
Relief to CBSE
NEET and JEE Main both the examinations for the medical and engineering entrances were conducted by Central Board of Secondary Examinations (CBSE). But this year onwards, NTA will be overtaking CBSE, and it will be responsible for conducting all the entrance examinations, it will lessen the burden over CBSE, giving it a relief.
They had conveyed to the HRD Ministry about the massive burden due to these. Around 50 lakh students appear for seven different entrance examinations including GATE and CMAT, which are held by CBSE, AICTE, IIMs and IITs.
National Testing Agency (NTA)
This is an entirely independent body that is responsible for conducting all the entrance examinations for higher educations on the lines of education in United States.
The main motive behind the formation of NTA was to set up an entirely independent body that will only look after the proper and fair means to conduct the medical and engineering entrance examinations. Also the foundation of the same was confirmed in the Union budget 2018 by Arun Jaitley.
As all the test will be online now, the students will be given proper mock test to attend those online exams. This is a great opportunity or it could be said as a second chance to those students who were not able to attend the exam due to the board examination, and also for those who scored less marks. Many of them will not have to waste an additional year.
This has ultimately reduced the load over CBSE. Now they can look forward in the improvisation of the educational content, questions banks, study materials etc. As mentioned by the authorities, like for the exams that were held in April, the forms were available by the month of December, but now as the exam itself is in that months, the forms will be available by September.
