
Patna: Rinki Pandey of Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) defeated her rival Shambhu Singh Patel of Congress in Bhabua assembly seat in Kaimur district of Bihar by over 15,000 votes.
Elsewhere in the state, Lalu Prasad Yadav's RJD won the Jehanabad assembly seat by more than 35,000 votes. The RJD candidate Suday Yadav defeated Abhiram Sharma of JD(U) in Jehanabad.

08:00 am Counting of votes in Araria parliamentary seat, and Bhabua and Jehanabad assembly seats in Bihar where by elections were held on Sunday started today at 08:00 am. The process began with counting of postal ballots.
In Jehanabad assembly seat the postal ballots are about 150. JDU's candidate from Jehanabad, Abhiram Sharma reached at counting center last midnight. There was a scuffle between him and RJD's Suday Yadav
07:30 am Counting of votes in Araria parliamentary seat, and Bhabua and Jehanabad assembly seats in Bihar where by elections were held on Sunday will begin today at 08:00 am, according to the State Election Commission.
The poll panel said the process will begin with counting of postal ballots. Around 15 tables will be used at each counting centre in different assembly segments. Though the final result will be announced by today afternoon, trends and leads will start coming by 08:30 am when the first round of counting is expected to end.
In Bihar's Araria parliamentary by election 57 per cent polling was registered. In the Bhabua and Jehanabad Assembly constituencies in Bihar, where bypolls were also held, the voter turnout was 54.03 per cent and 50.06 per cent respectively, Bihar's Chief Electoral Officer Ajay V Nayak said.
In Araria, RJD’s Sarfaraz Alam, son of deceased MP Taslimuddin is contesting against BJP’s Pradip Singh while in Jehanabad the fight is between RJD’s Suday Yadav, son of deceased MLA Mundrika Singh Yadav, and JD(U)’s Abhiram Sharma. The Bhabua seat is witnessing a straight contest between BJP’s Rinki Pandey and Congress’ Shambhu Singh Patel.
The RJD-Congress alliance is upbeat after a good voter turnout in Araria, Bhabua and Jehanabad and expressed confidence that the alliance candidates will win.
Along with the by-elections in Bihar, elections were also held in Gorakhpur and Phulpur, Uttar Pradesh. Gorakhpur is the parliamentary constituency and stronghold of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. Similarly, Phulpur is the parliamentary constituency of Keshav Prasad Maurya. Adityanath and Maurya both resigned from the parliament to become Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, thus necessitating the by-elections.
