Lucknow: Rajesh Sahini (48), an Additional Superintendent of Uttar Pradesh Police's Anti-Terror Squad (ATS), shot and killed himself inside his office on Tuesday afternoon. He used service revolver to shoot himself in the temple at 12.45 pm, police said.

"It gives us immense grief to communicate the unfortunate demise of Rajesh Sahini, Additional SP ATS. He was one of the most promising officers of UP police. The reasons for his suicide are still being ascertained. Our prayers are with the family," Director General of Police O P Singh.

Sahini, a 1992-batch Provincial Police Services (PPS) officer, was instrumental in the arrest of a suspected Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) operative of Pakistan's intelligence agency from Uttarakhand only last week.

Sahini, who was with the National Investigation Agency (NIA) for about two years before joining the UP ATS in July 2014, had also led an encounter with the self-radicalised operations head of an ISIS module in Lucknow on March 7, 2017.

Sahini committed suicide barely two weeks after Himanshu Roy, Former Maharashtra ATS Chief and Additional Director General of Police (Establishment), shot himself with his service revolver at his residence in Mumbai.

Back in March 2013, Sanjay Banerjee, a Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) attached with Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS), had committed suicide by shooting himself in front of his family members in a hotel at neighbouring Thane.
