Patna: Few months after the reports of a shelter home where minor girls were raped, a mob brke into a residential school in Bihar and mercilessly beat as many as 34 girls for some of them resisting the attempts of some local boys to sexually harass them, police said.
The girls, all aged 12 to 16 years, were admitted to a local hospital. "Some 20 of them have been discharged after treatment", the police said.
Trouble began yesterday as a clash between the schoolgirls and local boys erupted after some of the girls caught a group of boys sneaking into the Kasturba Residential School, a government institution for girls, in Triveniganj, Saupaul district -- 250 km from state capital Patna.
The girls beat the boys after they misbehaved and refsued to leave, eyewitnesses said.
After around two hours in the afternoon, the boys came back with their parents and relatives, and broke into the school and started beating the minor girl students, one of the students told the local police.
"Despite requests to calm, the mob beat up the students and teachers. Later, the injured girls had to be hospitalized", the school principal said in a complaint filed with the police.
The incident comes to light only few months after more than 30 girl students in a government-funded shelter home in Muzaffarpur complained that they were raped on multiple occasions. In a separate case, months later, a Buddhist monk was arrested for sexually harassing 15 students at a school in Gaya.
