Hyderabad: K Ravinder Reddy, the judge who had acquitted the Hindus accused of planting and conspiring bomb blast inside Mecca Masjid and later resigned said the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) is a patriotic party, does not have a "family rule" and hence he will be pleased to join such a party.
Reddy was supposed to join the BJP on Thursday however he did not do so, though banners welcoming him into the party fold were put up at the BJP headquarters in Telangana. Telangana is set to go for state elections in the next few months.
“During BJP president Amit Shah's visit to Hyderabad on September 14, the retired sessions judge had met him and expressed his desire to join the party. He said he can contribute to the party as an intellectual or join active politics,” Telangana BJP chief Dr K Laxman said on Friday.
“It is not yet decided whether Reddy would be admitted into the party and, if admitted, what his role would be,” he added.
Reddy on the other hand told reporters that he was asked to keep his programme of joining the BJP on hold, but that no reason was cited.
"Former Union Minister and Secunderabad MP Bandaru Dattatreya felicitated me and invited me to join the party. I also expressed my interest to join as I believe it is a party which has national interest. It is the only national level patriotic party and does not have any family-rule", he said.
Reddy, the then Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge, had resigned hours after pronouncing the Mecca Masjid blast case verdict acquitting all the Hindu accused. Some of the accused in the case had a known link with the BJP and RSS leaders.
Reddy was also among the 11 subordinate judges suspended by the Hyderabad High Court in June 2016 for protesting appointment of the judges who hail from Andhra Pradesh to the courts in Telangana and over the demand for setting up a separate high court for Telangana. The suspension was later revoked.
Meanwhile, All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) Chief Asaduddin Owaisi took to Twitter to say, "Yes Retired Judge saheb we knew where you were heading and certainly you will be rewarded by Supreme Leader, and Assemanand and Co will campaign for you. I hope you loose your deposit."
