Mumbai: Tariq Anwar, one of the founding member of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and the party's face in Bihar, has resigned after Sharad Pawar's "clean chit" to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Rafale deal hit the headlines on Friday.
Tariq Anwar resigned from all posts of the party and also as Lok Sabha member. Tariq Anwar is MP from Katihar in Bihar.
"I was hurt by Sharad Pawar's statement", Tariq Anwar said while announcing his decisio to quit the party.
In an interview to a Marathi news channel Thursday, Sharad Pawar, who shares a good relationship with Prime Minister Narendra Modi had said, "There is no doubt in public minds about Modi's intentions in the Rafale deal, that's what I feel."
Pawar, a former defence minister, also said the Opposition's demand for technical details on the fighter jet deal "made no sense".
Pawar however supported the demand of probe by joint parliamentary committee saying something is indeed messed up in the deal.
Following Tariq Anwar's resignation senior NCP leaders, including Supriya Sule and Praful Patel, tried to control damages saying Pawar was misquoted by the media. But, the damage control by senior leader was of no result as Munaf Hakim, NCP General Secretary in Maharashtra and former Chairman of Minorities Commission, also resigned from the party saying it was “difficult” to defend the party's image after Pawar “supported” PM Modi in the Rafale fighter jet issue.
Munaf Hakim also said that more leaders will desert the party in the coming days as there is a widespread anger in the party against the leadership.
Sharad Pawar and other NCP leaders have been accused of supporting the BJP government in Maharashtra from behind the backdoors. Recently, Prakash Ambedkar had alleged that he did not consider NCP a secular party.
