New Delhi: Only 34 Muslims from different parts of India are among the 1,078 candidates recommended by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) based on the 2015 Civil Services Main exam and the personal interviews.
Athar Aamir ul Shafi Khan of Jammu and Kashmir, who stood second in the list of 1,078 successful candidates, is the only Muslim among the top 100.
Four Muslims were among the top 100 in the list of successful candidates selected based on UPSC Civil Services 2014 exams. 38 Muslims were in the list of total 1,236 candidates in 2014.
In 2013 a total of 34 Muslims had cleared the exam, whereas in 2012, 30 Muslims were among the successful candidates, four of them were among top 100.
The performance of successful Muslim candidates is almost same in numbers if compared with the results of last few years. In 2009, a total of 31 Muslims were in the list of 791 successful candidates. Though percentage wise it shows a marginal decline.
Likewise, in 2010 among the 875 successful candidates 21 were Muslims with Dr. Shah Faisal of Kashmir topping the exam at the national level.
Similarly in 2011, 31 Muslims were among the 920 successful candidates whereas in 2012 too 30 Muslims were selected for the civil services.
The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) recommends posting of the successful candidates on the basis of their ranks. Top ranked candidates are recommended for Indian Administrative Service, Indian Foreign Service, Indian Police Service, and Central Services, Group ‘A’ and Group ‘B’ in that order.
Union Public Service Commission on Tuesday declared the final results of Civil Services Examination 2015 with Tina Dabi securing the first rank. The second and third ranks have been bagged by Athar Aamir Ul Shafi Khan and Jasmeet Singh Sandhu respectively.
While Tina Dabi is from Delhi, Athar Khan belong to Jammu and Kashmir. Athar belongs to a modest village of Devipora in South Kashmir's Anantnag district. He is the youngest boy, 22, to crack the exam from the valley.
The results are important for Jammu and Kashmir as before Athar Khan, Dr Shah Faisal had topped the UPSC Civil Service exams in 2010.
Ansar Shaikh of Jalna in Maharashtra is another candidate who has cracked the exam at the age of 22.
A total number of 1078 successful candidates have been recommended for appointment to Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS), Indian Police Service (IPS) and Central Services, Group 'A' and Group 'B'.
The successful candidates include 499 from the General category, 314 other backwards castes, 176 Scheduled Castes and 89 Scheduled Tribes.
Also among the succesful are 17 candidates of Zakat Foundation of India (ZFI) - a charity organisation running free coaching for Civil Services Exams.
There are 180 vacancies in IAS, 45 in IFS, 150 in IPS, 728 in Central Services Group 'A' and 61 in Group 'B' Services. This includes 46 vacancies for the physically handicapped.
