Right to Information Act (RTI), experts say is the most important act ever passed in post Independence India. One of the primary motives behind this act is to check the rampant corruption in the country. But has its implantation resulted in the desired results? The statistics show, in more than 75% cases the act has been used not to control the corruption but for exactly opposite purpose. The alarming situation though belatedly brought the Malegaon Municipal Corporation (MMC) into action and when it planned various awareness seminars during the week-long campaign for Communal Harmony and National Integration, a workshop on the efficient use of the RTI Act found its place top in the list.
“The act is a boon and this is true that if used efficiently it can provide solutions to many of our regular problems”, observed P. A. Inamdar, Chairman of Azam Campus Pune while wrapping up the discussion at Shivaji Town Hall in Malegaon on November 21. “But it is equally true that the people for whom this act has been passed they are not aware of its importance. Hence others are misusing it”, he added.
“However”, Inamdar suggested, “A practical way to reduce if not completely eliminate its misuse is to keep the record of the people who are seeking information under this act. Such statistics by tracking the people frequently using the act will help in checking their intention. Also, the offices without waiting for anyone to seek information from them should start releasing the details of the ongoing proceedings of the meetings and decisions taken on their own.”
Earlier Advocate Milan Khor of Nashik and Kiran Kulkarni of YESHDA explained the details of the act and also the procedure to seek information under RTI Act. At the same time they urged the audience not to use the act with wrong intention. “The act has given immense power to the common man. If used properly it will certainly result in a corruption free and more efficient administration”, stated Adv. Milan Khor.
The day-long seminar ended with the experts replying to the queries raised by the audience that included prominent citizens of the town on the basis of facts and figures in a very systematic manner.
